David Albertini, PhD

Dr. Albertini is an established reproductive cell biologist who has specialized in the physiology of the ovary and early embryo for over thirty years. He is an internationally recognized scientist for development and implementation of assisted reproduction techniques in animal model systems and has translated these findings to human biology in the areas of oocyte maturation and cryopreservation. Since assuming the Hall Professorship at KUMC, he has taken an active role in the KU Cancer Center exploring mechanisms of DNA damage and repair in the ovary in collaboration with the Jensen laboratory and maintains active collaborations and leadership roles in the hormone and fertility subgroup of the Cancer Prevention Program. Dr. Albertini continues a productive collaboration with Dr. Petroff on chemical targets in the female reproductive tract and was involved in recruiting Dr. Sam Kim and instituting the Fertility Reservation Program at the KU Medical Center two years ago in which he serves as the basic science director. He provides regular training to Cancer Center members in the use of microscope based imaging and is actively pursuing the mechanisms by which radiation and chemotherapy induce oocyte and embryo DNA damage in hopes of identifying putative protective regimens that would preserve the ovaries of young cancer patients to ensure their subsequent fertility. Extending these studies to unravel the mechanisms that cause chemotherapy-induced oocyte loss is well within the purview of our broad research interests and fits immediately into the goals of the KU Cancer Center and the NCI in improving the quality of life for cancer survivors.
